DISABILITY PRIDE PARADE
The parade starts at 11:00am at the staging area at 401 S. Plymouth Court (Plymouth Court and Van Buren, at the rear of the main public library) then continues West on Van Buren to Dearborn Street and turns North onto Dearborn Street before leading into Daley Plaza. At this year’s parade, the Road to Freedom Bus will be joining us for our celebrations. The bus contains a traveling exhibit called the ADA Legacy Tour, and is a reminder that buses have played a major role in the disability rights movement. Many people know that fighting for accessible buses was one of the biggest fights of the early disability movement. In fact, here in Chicago, ADAPT and other local disability groups won a lawsuit to force the local transit authority to put lifts on buses, just before the ADA was passed. Plus, a bus was how Justin and Yoshiko Dart traveled the country to host listening sessions that led to the creation of the ADA.
