Shriners Hospitals for Children hosted a special movie day for children with special needs. Shriners rented out a theatre at Lake Theatre Classic Cinemas in Oak Park and had a special showing of The Sponge Bob Movie, and also had a video about the Shriners Hospitals for Children – Chicago mission and its services play and repeat before the actual showing of the movie. The theatre was setup for children with special needs, such as only dimming the lights so children with sensitivity issues would still feel comfortable and be able to enjoy the movie.

The event was a true red carpet kind of experience. The Shriners Hospitals for Children mascot, Fezzy the Bear, as well as Sponge Bob were there to greet the children and lead them into the theatre with their families. This was a community event, and while it was geared toward children with special needs, others without special needs came to the event, which is the goal of the ADA…to be treated and accepted as equals.
