NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMPLOYMENT OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
What Career Placement and Accessibility Professionals Need to Know
As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ADA, dramatic changes are taking place in the employment landscape for people with disabilities thanks to new federal regulations. Come learn from disability employment expert Dr. Sarah Helm how companies are addressing new federal hiring guidelines, and how colleges and universities can prepare students to succeed.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES TRANSITION PROJECT
Students with disabilities often face greater barriers to successful transition into college and into the workforce after degree completion. In response to ADA 25 Chicago’s call for educational and business leaders to establish legacy projects in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the ADA, CCC is offering a Students with Disabilities Transition Project comprised of initiatives that support the transition of high school students with disabilities to CCC, and the transition of CCC students post-graduation into careers of economic value.
The goals of the project are:
1. To support the transition of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students with disabilities to enrollment at CCC through enhanced collaboration with CPS and outreach to students and their parents.
2. To ensure student awareness of CCC Disability Access Center (DAC) services, emphasize early registration with DACs, give special focus to dual enrollment opportunities, and educate students and parents about the different landscape of post-secondary disability services.
3. Target CCC Career Planning and Placement outreach to students with disabilities to support student transition into careers of economic value and ensure awareness of the unique opportunities, accessibility, and accommodations employers provide to employees with disabilities and help students build self- expectations and career roadmaps.
CCC Career Planning and Placement and DAC staff have joined with ADA 25 Chicago, The Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, Health and Disability Advocates, and corporate representatives to identify professional development needs for career placement staff and linkages to employers. Enhancements to CCC outreach to CPS diverse learners and CCC career placement services will launch at the start of fall semester 2015.
