JJ’S LIST PROGRAMS

LEARNING LAB WORKSHOP – DISABILITY AWARENESS TRAINING

The Harris Theater will host inclusive staff training for its 35 resident companies, as well as a limited number of peer organizations.

DISABILITY AWARENESS TRAINING PROJECT

Since 2009, the JJ’s List Disability Awareness Trainings have reached over 3,000 business employees. Now they are expanding the impact of their dedication to the promise of the ADA by taking these lively experiences to major Chicago cultural institutions and Chicago Public Schools. In 2015, JJ’s List was awarded a grant through the Reva and David Logan Foundation that was created to recognize the 25th anniversary of the ADA by promoting inclusion. This grant allows them to offer additional trainings this calendar year, reaching five new audiences of organization staff, volunteers, students and teachers, who will their build confidence and comfort interacting with peers, students, colleagues and customers who have disabilities. Could one of those groups be yours?

WHAT IS A DISABILITY AWARENESS TRAINING?

During a Training, the Disability Awareness Players engage audiences in role-play and practice person-first language together. JJ's List presentations are interactive and exciting. Nobody is put on the spot...disability awareness is taught as an experiential process, not an unquestionable directive.

The Disability Awareness Players are experts in disability because they themselves have disabilities. The Players share their personal experiences and provide tips of preferred interaction approaches and audience members walk away with skills they can use immediately. Through this public speaking experience, the Disability Awareness Players themselves build communications and networking skills that they need for employment and workplace success.
